Ovulation Induction
Before IUI Treatment

Some women may require ovulation induction before undergoing IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) treatment. Clomid (clomiphene citrate) is a commonly prescribed fertility medication used to stimulate ovulation and improve the chances of conception.

Patients are typically advised to take one 50 mg tablet daily from Days 3 to 7 of their menstrual cycle. If ovulation does not occur at the initial dosage, your fertility specialist may adjust the dosage based on your response to treatment. Once ovulation is confirmed, IUI treatment or timed intercourse may be recommended to maximise the chances of pregnancy.

To begin an IUI cycle, mark Day 1 as the first day of your menstrual period and contact the clinic to schedule your appointment and treatment plan.

About Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

What Is IUI (Intrauterine Insemination)?

From routine screening to advanced gynaecological procedures, Seng's OG Practice provides personalised care for women through every stage of life.

IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) is a commonly performed fertility treatment that involves preparing sperm in a laboratory and placing healthy, motile sperm directly into the uterus around the time of ovulation. IUI treatment may be performed using the male partner's sperm or donor sperm, depending on the individual's fertility needs.

The success of IUI depends on several factors, including the underlying cause of infertility and whether the procedure is performed during a natural cycle or a medication-assisted cycle.

IUI treatment may be particularly beneficial for:

  • Couples with unexplained infertility
  • Cervical mucus factors that affect sperm survival
  • Ejaculatory dysfunction or difficulties with intercourse
  • Patients undergoing ovulation induction or stimulated IUI cycles

In suitable patients, up to three IUI treatment cycles may be recommended before reviewing alternative fertility treatment options. Your fertility specialist will assess your progress and discuss the most appropriate next steps.

IUI may be less effective in cases of significant male factor infertility, particularly when sperm counts remain low after sperm preparation. Success rates may also decline with increasing maternal age, especially in women over 40 years old.

SAFETY & RISK INFORMATION

Risk of Intrauterine Insemination Treatment

Like all fertility treatments, IUI (Intrauterine Insemination) carries certain risks. Before starting IUI treatment, your fertility specialist will discuss these risks and explain how they are monitored and managed.

Multiple Pregnancy

The risk of multiple pregnancy is higher when IUI treatment is performed in a stimulated cycle. Most multiple pregnancies are twins, although higher-order pregnancies can occasionally occur.

During your IUI cycle, ultrasound monitoring is used to assess follicle development and reduce the risk of multiple pregnancies. If too many follicles develop, your fertility specialist may recommend postponing treatment to prioritise patient safety.

Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome (OHSS)

OHSS is an uncommon complication that can occur when fertility medications stimulate the ovaries too strongly. Patients with polycystic ovaries may have a higher risk of developing OHSS.

Seek medical attention if you experience:

  • Abdominal pain or bloating
  • Shortness of breath
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Reduced urine output

The risk of severe OHSS during IUI treatment is low, and your fertility specialist will monitor your response to treatment to minimise potential complications.
